About Tubac
THE FULL PICTURE
Tubac was established in 1752 as the first European settlement in what is now Arizona — 24 years before the Declaration of Independence. Today it is the most charming and unexpected community in Southern Arizona. Over 100 galleries and artist studios are clustered around the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. The Tubac Golf Resort & Spa is a genuine destination property that attracts visitors from across the country. The Santa Cruz River runs through, creating a riparian corridor that is internationally recognized for birding — Madera Canyon (30 minutes away) is one of the top birding destinations in North America. Tubac is a second-home destination, a retirement choice, and increasingly an option for remote workers who want to trade urban congestion for extraordinary beauty and culture.
Arts Community
100+ galleries and studios selling original work — not reproductions, not crafts fair goods. The Annual Tubac Festival of the Arts is the largest arts festival in Arizona, attracting visitors from across the country. A genuine creative community, not a tourist approximation of one.
History
Tubac Presidio State Historic Park — Arizona's oldest state park, preserving the Spanish military fort that anchored the settlement. The underground ruins of the original presidio are visible through a viewing floor in the visitor center.
Santa Cruz River
The Santa Cruz River corridor here is one of North America's premier birding locations. Madera Canyon (30 min) hosts 250+ bird species and is a bucket-list destination for serious birders. The Anza Trail follows the river for miles.
County Note
Santa Cruz County — not Pima County. Same distinction as Rio Rico: different tax rates, different school district, different county services.
